The Key to Lisbon: The Third French Invasion of Portugal, 1810-11

This study details the preparation, planning and execution of the invasion of Portugal in 1810 by the French Armée de Portugal under Marshal Massena, and the defensive measures taken by the British and their Portuguese and Spanish allies.

It also covers the practice of all armies involved during this campaign, working from original sources. These sources provide a different interpretation of some key aspects of the campaign to those which are generally accepted.

The work focuses on the strategic, operational, and tactical planning undertaken by both sides in preparation for the invasion, and the actual progress of the campaign. A narrative of the battles and sieges, with analysis at the tactical-level, also brings out the differences in planning and intelligence gathering. This particular campaign is important as it has attracted little attention from historians, and was crucial as a turning point in the Peninsular War.

This was the last time that Portugal was invaded by the French during the Peninsular War, and the allies’ handling of the campaign contrasted sharply with that of the French. Its success also gave Wellington political security against the ‘croakers’ back in England.

The research demonstrates the difficulties both armies had in prosecuting their plans during the campaign, and highlights the stark differences in the approach taken by each commander.

Park Day is Next Saturday

Park Day is only one week away! Next Saturday, April 6, please visit a battlefield or historic site in your community to help keep our nation's most-storied places looking their best. It’s a fun and meaningful way to lend a hand and, in many cases, experience the places you helped save at Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War battlefields.

This year, volunteers of all ages can get out of the house, give back, and honor our history at one of nearly 160 participating sites in 32 states and the District of Columbia. Park Day volunteers will help with projects such as planting flowers, raking leaves and maintaining interpretative signs and walking trails — and participants will receive a commemorative Park Day T-shirt (quantities may be limited). Many sites also offer complimentary tours or history talks after the work is complete, where you can hear about the unique role of their Park Day site in our national story.

As an American Battlefield Trust supporter, you play an invaluable role in protecting these sites. Every day, you are part of the team that is helping to preserve our hallowed grounds. We hope you’ll join volunteers next weekend to beautify these places and share your dedication to the cause. Your effort makes a difference locally and across the country.

Take a look at our participating list of sites and register for an event near you.

Park Day is next Saturday! Register to volunteer at an event near you and spread the word on social media using the hashtag #ParkDay2019.

Project Update #11: Kickstarter for 10mm Demon Infantry Miniatures from Black Gate Miniatures

Project Update #11: Kickstarter for 10mm Demon Infantry Miniatures from Black Gate Miniatures

Thank you to each of the sixty nine backers and outline of the way forward.

"Successfully raised £6,682 with 69 backers"

Sixty nine of you believed in the 10mm Demons and so they will be brought to life.

It will take about a week for the money to be transferred from Kickstarter to my account, after that the process will be as follows.

Finish paying for the art, from Christian, for the whole Demon range, including all second phase models.

Finalise the details with Robi for the sculpting of everything included in the Kickstarter.

Wait for the sculpts to start to arrive. This will be the biggest gap in time and updates will be thin during this time. Expectation is all sculpts will be with me by the end of summer but it all depends on how quickly Robi gets to doing the sculpts.

Send out the Reward Survey to backers. You can specify what miniatures you want at this stage and any extra purchases will be settled with the PayPal invoice for the actual P&P.

Organise the provisions needed for moulding and casting.

During the Autumn, I hope to be doing the moulding and casting of all miniatures.

PayPal invoices will be sent for any extra purchases and the P&P balance. Refunds for any excess P&P charges that were included by Kickstarter will be sorted at this point. Unless you are Paul Winter :)

By the end of 2019, the packing and shipping should be completed.

So we are soon going to be entering the quite period. Rest assured that even if updates are not frequent, this will be moving on in the background.

Thanks once again for backing the project.

Demons forever!

Tank Destroyer: Achilles & M10, British Army Anti-Tank Units, Western Europe, 1944-1945

Tank Destroyer: Achilles & M10, British Army Anti-Tank Units, Western Europe, 1944-1945

In this heavily illustrated volume in the TankCraft series Dennis Oliver focuses on the Achilles - the British variant of the American M10 - which was one of the most important Allied tank destroyers of the Second World War.

It played a key role in the armoured battles fought on the Western Front, in particular in France, the Low Countries, Germany and Italy. Built on an adapted Sherman chassis, with sloped armour, an open-topped turret and powerful 17-pounder gun, it was designed to counter the threat posed by the formidable panzers deployed by the German army towards the end of the conflict, in particular the Panther and Tiger tanks.

The book covers the design and operational history of the Achilles in close detail, using rare archive photographs and meticulously researched colour illustrations, as well as a detailed, authoritative text. A key section displays available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales.

Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also examined providing everything the modeller needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic armoured fighting vehicles.

Apex from TTCombat

How about the Apex? This colossal beast is the ultimate predator, snacking on smaller creatures and even battletanks with very little care for the difference!

This massive monster is for Dropzone Commander, and you can find its (ludicrous) rules here. Now’s the time to pick up the Apex, as with Battle for Earth round the corner, it’s good practice to fight against. You’re going to need all the help you can get fighting giant enemies.
