Spartan Games – Update

Spartan Games Closure – additional information

First, the Directors would like to start out with a sincere thank you for all the messages we have received expressing sadness at our closure.  It is good to hear that our games brought you enjoyment over the years.

Alongside a considerable number of messages of support we have received hundreds of emails with questions.  We have made a start at answering them individually but with no remaining staff, this is proving impossible.  We would therefore like to answer the most commonly asked questions here.

1.       Will I receive the items I ordered from your online store or pledged for in the Dystopian Wars Expansion Kickstarter project?

Alas, for the most part, the answer is no.  If you have received an email notifying you that goods were dispatched then they are on their way.  Deliveries can take up to two to three weeks in different parts of the world so they may simply not have reached you yet.

However, if your goods have not left our building yet, unfortunately they can’t be sent.  We were committed to shipping everything that was in stock and ready to put skeleton staff in place to do so.  Unfortunately our accounts have been frozen so we have no way of paying for shipping charges and our landlords require the return of the premises.  We discussed this at length today with our advisors and although we explored lots of options, because we know customers have offered to cover postage and even collect goods, unfortunately we couldn’t find a way to make this work.

2.       Will stock that is remaining be available for sale?
There is a possibility that it will, although there is limited final product.  There are still details to be worked out but we are building a list of email addresses for those who might be interested in purchasing whatever items of products stock we have available.  This will include items built for the Kickstarter project.  We wish we could send them to you but, as explained above, this won’t be possible due to circumstances beyond our control.  If you want to be added to the mailing list, please send an email, if you have not already done so, to spartangames@mail.com with STOCK in the subject line.
3.       Who is handling the closure of the company?

This appointment is in progress but it takes time to follow the required procedures.  We will advise who this is once the process is complete.

4.       Has there been interest in the purchase of assets such as the product lines?

Yes, considerable interest and we are following up on this with our advisors.  Parties wishing to purchase assets should email spartangames@mail.com and their email will be acknowledged and their details passed on.

5.       Are you answering emails?

As explained here and in previous statements, staff have been made redundant so we have very limited resources to handle emails.  We are working through the hundreds we have received.  If the emails are about orders, we will not unfortunately, be able to acknowledge them individually and hope this statement explains the status.  If they are about individual stock purchases, we will add email address to the mailing list we are building.  If they are about purchase of assets, we will acknowledge and pass on the details.  If they are about anything else, we will answer where possible.  Other email addresses are no longer being monitored and will cease to exist in the coming days and weeks.

Again we would like to express our regret at the impact this closure has had on staff, customers and other trading partners.  We are doing all we can to minimise the impact and to do the best that we can under the circumstances.  Please bear with us and thank you again for your support at this difficult time.

Spartan Games Announces Closure

Spartan Games Announces Closure

The following statement is issued today, Friday 25th August 2017.

Following a prolonged period of challenging trading and despite the director's best efforts to manage through, Rebel Publishing Ltd was unable to continue to trade and the directors have taken the difficult decision to cease. All members of staff were made redundant.

The company, which traded as Spartan Games, is a Somerset, UK based provider of tabletop miniature games which include

Uncharted Seas, a fantasy naval combat game (now retired)
Firestorm Armada, an exciting space combat game featuring highly detailed starship models
Dystopian Legions, a game based in the world of Dystopian Wars using highly detailed 32mm scale figures and vehicles (now retired)
Dystopian Wars– an exciting journey in a Victorian sci-fi world encompassing naval combat, ground warfare and aerial combat.
Spartan Scenics – a range of detailed and easily assembled wargames terrain.

Rebel Publishing Ltd was formed in July 2002 and traded successfully for a number of years. Spartan Games was launched in 2008 and grew rapidly.  However, the tabletop games market is challenging and has changed over recent years, and suppliers are predominantly a small number of large well-known names and several small, cottage industry, type businesses.

Initially the business outsourced production but following quality control and production management issues, manufacturing was moved in house between 2009 and 2011.  Over this time and since, significant investment was made into machinery and infrastructure. The business also expanded to provide models for a well known video game, moving this into the tabletop games arena.  However, significant new development costs, timing issues and the deflection of management time from the core games brands resulted in a significant trading loss for 2015/6. The business was able to continue to trade by raising additional finance and refocusing on core brands, and direct / online trading improved significantly.   Results for 2016/17 were significantly improved.

However, despite this it continued to encounter challenging trading conditions and it became clear this month that the company could not continue to service its liabilities, particularly given the burden imposed by the amounts owing to finance companies.

The company was in the process of running a Kickstarter project to raise funds for expansion of one of its successful product lines.  This was well supported and positive feedback on the new products was given showing the popularity of the product line and ongoing demand.  However, this does not, unfortunately, provide the full range of success and resources needed to sustain the business.

In addition to challenging trading issues, one of the directors has suffered from a long period of poor health which became significantly more serious earlier this year and although now back in the business, requires ongoing treatment.  That has inevitably taken a toll on the amount of time available to the business so, along with other challenges, has significantly contributed to this difficult decision.

The directors are extremely saddened by this decision and particularly regret any losses incurred by employees, customers, suppliers or other trading partners.  The directors fully committed their time, energy and personal resources to effect a turnaround.  Employees will receive redundancy payments through state funds and although efforts have been made to fulfil customer orders, it is hoped that anyone who does not receive their goods will be able to redeem their payments through their credit card or PayPal.

If customers have made a deposit or paid for goods or services by credit or debit card and the goods or services are not going to be received by the due date, they may be able to get their money back by claiming a refund from their card issuer.  They should contact their card issuer as soon as possible.  Further information including time limits that apply is available from the UK Cards Association: Credit and debit cards: A consumer guide.  Similar schemes exist in other countries.

Throughout the years that Spartan Games has traded, it has prided itself on the highest level of product quality and customer satisfaction.  This has been delivered consistently and is evidenced though annual customer research that the company has undertaken.

We would encourage anybody who may be interested in acquiring either stock, assets or the business to make contact as soon as possible.  Spartan Games and its product lines have a strong reputation in its markets together with an asset base which may be of interest to a number of parties, and a variety of machinery in addition to Intellectual Property.

All enquiries about this matter should be sent to spartangames@mail.com.

Feedback from the Survey – Part II

Feedback from the Survey – Part II

Hi all and welcome to the second of my blogs to dig deeper into the survey results you so graciously assisted us in collecting. This time around I want to follow up the question we asked you: EXACTLY what does support mean to you?

If we quickly recap on the top answers you came back with:

1) Release of new models
2) Scenarios and Battle Reports
3) Release of new Rules 4) Campaign Blogs
5) Painting Guides
6) Organised play materials

Before you read on, my apologies for the length of this blog – there is lots to talk about. I will also focus on Spartan Games IP, saving Halo for its own blog. Let’s go through your survey list one by one:

1) Release of new models
As a manufacturing company, it is fair to say we love making new models and, you could say, we get overexcited by the idea of making them! Over the years, each game has experienced different levels of growth and the release of models. It is probably a good idea to discuss each game separately in terms of new models.

Firestorm Planetfall grew rapidly in its model count as the game developed in its first year. Our Core six races now have a full set of Helixes, giving a cool list of models, and we made our first six Alliances Helixes available.

The good news is that there is huge scope for expansion and we need to hammer this home. As many of you know, we have been working on version 2.0 of the Planetfall rules and many of our expansion plans are linked to this new rulebook, but there are things we can do before then that bring new models to you.

One of our first tasks is to give you more flexibility in your Helixes. If we take a Core Helix as an example, we state that it must have a Large Armoured Vehicle in it – but wouldn’t it be cool if we gave you more choices of Large. Same goes for some of the other vehicle sizes in the game. This will build a meta build into the helix structure we feel players should warm to.
There is lots of scope for game development open to us by taking this approach and we have embarked on the process of defining what these new vehicles will be.

The larger model of expansion for Planetfall will come in the shape of new helixes for Alliance race/faction. Right now, you have a sampler of what those races have to offer in battle, but what about if you want to play a Core Force composed of mostly RSN, with the Dindenzi acting as their support. In my mind, I can see a tabletop force using RSN tanks and robots at its core (yes, I do love the Arch Angel model) and its bulk of infantry being supplied by the Dindrenzi. Facing this could be a Hawker core supported by Terran Alliance ground pounders!

Picking on RSN and Hawker in my example there could well be prompted by the fact that the first two Alliances to be fleshed out to operate as a Core Force are these two factions. We’re very excited by this Alliance Faction expansion during 2017.

2) Scenarios and Battle Reports
To date our delivery of these types of articles to you has been hit and miss and we certainly need to lift our game for you. To this end, I am looking to put together a virtual team of a contributors who feel they could work alongside Spartan Games to generate content. This will encompass all games and anyone interested should email me putting Scenarios &  Battle Reports in the email description please. If you have examples of your creativity, please feel free to attach them. My email address is: neil@spartangames.co.uk

3) Release of New Rules
I am going to split this into two: new rulebooks and new rule extensions.

Planetfall 2.0 is a project that is advanced and one that will come early in 2017. Our true 10mm scale massed ground combat game has made great inroads since its release, establishing itself both on gameplay and the quality of its models. Version 2.0 builds upon this and will be an exciting release.
The second part of rules is the idea of creating addendums to the core engine that we roll out to you, sometimes alternatives to doing things. Handled correctly these give us a good test bed for trying out new ideas with our community, collating your feedback and potentially adding those rules to a new edition of the core ruleset down the line. We have made add-on rules available for Legions, and at times in previous campaign books we dabbled in new rule extensions.

These are something we should make more available to you and I have marked this down for the Beta Group Leads to talk about for our different game systems. I also want to ponder the best way to deliver these to you, and how best to collect feedback. The natural way is to use our beta testers as these guys will be the route to delivering the rules to you anyway – we would have created the rules with their input/commentary. There is a lot of mileage to generating addendum rules for you all.

4) Campaign Blogs
As you have seen already we kicked of campaign blogs for FA and DW before or survey was conducted, but what has been firmly established by the survey that what we have done so far is just the tip of the iceberg. We need to keep generating the campaigns, detail them in more depth for you and marry them up to Scenarios and Battle Reports.
We are now viewing campaigns for our games as delivering at two levels. At the top level, we have strategic campaigns that Spartan Games creates to guide the game, the campaigns that will directly define core faction upgrades, even define the new factions that enter the game. We have already started on these, the first game seeing this being FA, but this community has only seen 1 of several campaigns started. Below this we will have the more tactical campaigns, almost mini campaigns that sit inside the top-level campaigns and these are the ones we dynamically push to you via blogs to promote game play and increase interactivity with you.
Much more to come on this subject.

5) Painting Guides
This is something we have struggled with over the years as our painting resource has always been used to paint models for packaging and photoshoots. There are a lot of hugely talented painters out there they use both brush and airbrush techniques. We believe that we should focus on Painting Reference materials, instead of trying to tutor people on how to use a brush. Showing what colours we recommend (our paint partner is Vallejo) and where to apply them makes more sense, and using this format we should also ensure we detail named fleets or fleets of renown.
We’ve kicked off having some samples digitally created and when they are ready we will share for discussion.

6) Organised Play Materials
We took from the survey that this is people are looking for materials to assist them in organising events where our games are played, and that they can take the shape of Tournaments and more generalised play, such as a 2-3 scenario mini-campaign that can see players getting together at their club or local gaming store. Again, not something we have done well at generating and is something that can be fixed for you by implementing much of the above.

At a more structured Tournament end of the spectrum, we have recently kicked off a process of looking again at how we work with people to plan and implement organised play. For Firestorm Armada, we are now working very closely with the organisers of the Adepticon Firestorm Tournaments to rationalise organised play. A new FA Tournament Guide has been created and the Scenarios recommended for it will be based on those selected by the FA Adepticon Team for their event in early 2017.

We plan to make graphics available of these Scenarios that can, should an organiser wish, be downloaded and sent to a gaming mat manufacturer. We are still considering how best to make this happen, but we are confident that if an organiser emails such a manufacturer asking for a mat to be printed using their own artwork they are unlikely to say no!
We will use the new FA Tournament Guide to drive a new DW Tournament Guide, and this could well be an extension we make to the Halo Tournament Guide. More to come on this subject.

In Summary
OK, so if you got this far – well done. This was a long blog and I appreciate you staying with. The long and the short of it is that Spartan needs to very much look beyond just making great models and rules for you. We need to create a community wide pool of information that assists in playing our games and growing the Firestorm Galaxy and Dystopian World. I’ve gone through some ideas above, but it is clear that this is going to be a rolling project of enhancement for you all. We have greatly appreciated the wonderful and deep feedback you have given us through the survey, and we will endeavour to continue this practice, to best ensure we support the settings and games of ours that you love.

Happy gaming by Spartan Neil

Statistics Achieve Planetfall

Statistics Achieve Planetfall

With the release of Firestorm: Planetfall around 18 months ago, the game has grown steadily to become a massive and engrossing strategic battle game. From the humble beginnings of a single Core Helix and an Allied Helix for each Faction at time of release, the game has now added Heavy Armour Helixes, Recon Helixes, 2 different types of Aerial Helix, Leviathan Helixes, Field Command Helixes and of course our latest exciting release – the Assault Helix (which is packed with loads of devastating robot goodness!).

The Order of Battles (ORBATS) for every model in the game are currently in the Downloads Section, with everything consolidated into a single document. These documents mark many months of testing, and we are looking forward to players around the world using them.

You can find the PDFs on the Spartan Games Downloads Page

In the coming weeks we will be releasing a new Background Document for each Race that highlights each model/element within the Planetfall game, along with operational and strategic background on the formation and battle tactics of each within the game. In addition, each of these Background Documents will have a narrative scenario that is bespoke to their Faction to give players a launch point for thematic games.

And as if that were not enough, we are just about to release a Tournament Pack for Planetfall to open up the game to the competitive gaming sphere, with the scenarios having been tested by the Planetfall Beta Team. If any of you have seen the Halo: Fleet Battles Tournament Pack, expect much the same… yes… it will be awesome!

Of course, this rapacious release schedule has only been possible with the intensive testing and feedback of our Beta Team, who have given of their time and expertise to help develop and build the game into the unqualified success it is today. So to our Beta Crew we say a hearty THANK YOU!

To be a Beta Tester, you gotta be a Fan!… and be willing to play loads of games!… write down feedback… take pictures… report back to the rest of the team… then start the process all over again when the model stats change. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds: it’s actually a lot of hard work, and those folks who are part of the Beta Test deserve great credit for their diligence (and fanaticism!).

If you think you have what it takes to join their ranks, come find me on the Spartan Games Forum and you never know… you may just be crazy enough to join the ranks!

THE FUTURE
With all 6 surrounding Helixes now in-play for the game, what next for the game of Planetfall?

Firstly, the Alliance Factions will be getting their own Core Helixes, which is a most exciting step forward. We will roll these out in pairs, one from each Alliance, and we’ll be showing you some new Alliance models not long after the Salute 2016 wargames show. We have created a linked campaign in the works that will bring all aspects of the Firestorm Galaxy together for narrative games, leading to a climax that will actually have an impact on the background of the entire Firestorm Galaxy.

There are two new Factions for the game incoming to the Galaxy (we’ll be lifting the lid on these for Firestorm Armada, Taskforce and Planetfall players shortly) and the Beta Team and I are pulling together the updated version of the rules – Planetfall 2.0. We’re hugely excited by Version 2.0, and we look forward to talking to you more about the book as it develops.

The future is looking very rosy indeed for Planetfall, with loads of exciting releases, fantastic background, engrossing scenarios and…. did I mention the 2.0 rules?…. yes… I thought I did!

Looking forward to you all joining us as we rage ground war across the Firestorm Galaxy!

Cheers for now,

Spartan Derek

Ground Command Helixes

Ground Command Helixes
One of the most exciting product releases during 2015 for Firestorm Planetfall was the Ground Command Helixes, which were announced in late October ready for shipping this month. It has been an exciting and busy year for Planetfall with a myriad of models released, and the roll out of the Command vehicles underpins not only our commitment to our 10mm scale ground warfare game, but sets out our product roll out for this exciting game.

Let’s recap on what we’ve launched to date for Planetfall:

Core Helix – the beginnings of your ground force which can be doubled up to form a powerful core of your sci-fi army
Recon Helix – fast support for the battlefield
Heavy Helix – more firepower as new heavy vehicles arrive
Firepower Leviathan Helix – the monsters of the battlefield designed to intimidate and destroy
Light Infantry Helix – as we roll towards our mission of expanding infantry warfare within Planetfall this Helix brought even more versatility to your ground pounders
Aerial Interceptor Helix – good old dog fighting in the skies above a planet
Ground Attack Helix – the ability to strike hard and fast against ground forces is delivered by this Helix

With the release of our Ground Command Helixes, which sit comfortably within the Field Support part of your helix force building, gamers now have access to battlefield command and control abilities like never before. Let’s look at each Helix:

“The idea of Ground Command Helixes is to anchor the existing Planetfall forces together, and set the scene for new Helixes. 2016 is set to be a most cool year for ground warfare in the Firestorm Galaxy. We found our feet in 2015, delivered a raft of excellent models, made our rules free to anyone who wants to play them and set the bedrock for the future. I can’t give it all away in this blog, but folk are set for an exciting journey next year,” explains Spartan Derek, lead designer of Firestorm Planetfall.

Dindrenzi Federation
The Dindrenzi utilise many Sky Drop assets in a bid to disrupt their enemies. One of the most effective of these assets is the fearsome Charon Heavy Command Drop Pod which is used to concuss and disorient its enemies prior to the execution of its core responsibility – the delivery of some of the Federation’s most vicious and aggressive troops, the Nyx.

Dindrenzi Command Helix

Beyond its troop delivery role, the Charon also acts as a static Artillery Command, bringing in low-orbit artillery to be targeted at locations of high enemy resistance. The more capable Dindrenzi Commander will ensure the Charon is deployed in the right place at the right time to deliver total devastation to i enemies. Armed with a flexible spread of anti-armour and interceptor weapons, the Charon maintains a strong battlefield presence delivering its ordnance and artillery support with precision.

The Nyx Light Infantry Cadres are the cutting edge to many Dindrenzi assaults. When massed together into a larger formation, such as a Grand Company, the Nyx can easily overwhelm their foes in close quarters battle.

Terran Alliance
Designed specifically to carry the best Terran Ground Infantry right into the middle of the fighting, the Slepnir Heavy Command Vehicle is not built to stand at the back watching idly by as the rest of the Terran army engages. It is equipped with a massive amount of close quarter grenade pods, ensuring that no lightly armoured enemy should get too close.

Terran Command Helix

Even if these infantry were to keep a suitable safe distance, the Command Vehicle can engage its thrusters to close the gap with frightening speed, using its stabilised grenade pod mounts to deliver a knockout blow.

The Slepnir’s greatest innovation comes in the form of a prototype Shield Harmonics Projector which can boost the power of nearby Terran Shields on other vehicles. This focused improvement is often taken over the more standard Shrike Rotor Weaponry as most Terran Commanders rely heavily on their defensibility when moving into position. Further to its close support capabilities, the Slepnir rains death upon the enemy with a dual Hammerstrike Missile system, ensuring the Slepnir Command Vehicle is a natural choice in most Terran Battle Groups.

Well equipped with highly effective small arms and often fielded with specialists such as Raptor Grenade Launcher Field Gun Teams and close support Sweeper Teams, the Hirdmen are some of the most numerous and effective infantry in the Firestorm Galaxy. When fielded in a fearsome Grand Company, the Hirdmen are more than capable of overwhelming any enemy with a combination of numbers and dogged determination.

Aquan Prime
The Malani Heavy Command Barge provides a flexible fire-bastion to any Aquan Forces it may be attached to. Armed with a fore-mounted Corona Heavy Laser battery, twin Maelstorm turret-mounts and a bank of Stingray missiles, the Command Barge is capable of independently targeting numerous targets, be they Armoured or Aerial.

Aquan Command Helix

The vehicle’s hull is formed of an intricate matrix of crystal and armoured shell causing the
Malani to have an increased resonance with Votari Crystals deployed on the battlefield, their effects magnified by the Malani’s presence until they become capable of storing even greater levels of laser energy fired into them by the remainder of the Aquan force.

As one of the most numerous surface-dwelling races that make up the forces of Aquan Prime it often falls to the Khitari infantry to prosecute Aquan interests on the battlefield. Well trained and well equipped, the Khitari engage their enemies with relish, trusting in their Shoal-mates and delivering the retribution of the Aquans into the heart of the enemy.

When fielded as a Grand Company, the noble Khitari are often used to overwhelm stubborn resistance who have dug themselves in, using a combination of Maelstrom Pulse Cannons and vicious close quarters battle to achieve their victory on the battlefield.

Sorylian Collective
The Jol’Tak Command Skiff acts as a mobile command and control point for the powerful Ro’Mul’Kat Warchiefs who lead the hosts of the Sorylian Collective. With their Kul’Vok Bodyguards in close attendance these venerable warriors fight alongside their subjects on the fields of battle spurring them on with their own acts of valour and ferocity.

Sorylian Command Helix

The Skiff is fitted with an array of the most powerful Sorylian communication devices and a prototype New-Dawn Nexus Designator that greatly increases the effectiveness of Sorylian artillery barrages. This technology allows the Sorylians to deploy their artillery with pinpoint accuracy, leaving the other factions in the Firestorm Galaxy to quake in fear as the Sorylians hammer home their dominance in the field of pre-plotted heavy ordnance. In addition, the Skiff is armed with a powerful Nar’VaK Titan Cannon and a brace of Sar’Nav Grenade Launchers, perfect for softening up a target prior to an assault by its transported infantry assets.

Ro’Mul’Kat War Chiefs are a collection of council members who have achieved their rank through experience and shared knowledge. Taken from the elite of the Mul’Kat cadres they have developed their warcraft under the tutelage of the greatest of the No’Bar’Ro Ancients. The War Chiefs lead
Kul’Vok Heavy Infantry into battle atop their massive command barges, charging directly into the heat of battle.

The Directorate
The nature of the Directorate is exemplified by the Assailant’s core function – Cyber Attack. The vehicle is highly capable when deploying its Cyber Weapons, boosting both itself and nearby elements who engage the enemy in a similar way. That is not to say the Assailant does not have direct action weaponry, commonly fielded with a fore-mounted linked Plasma Surge that ensures the vehicle it is utterly devastating when targeting enemies at short range.

Directorate Command Helix

In addition, Directorate low-orbit artillery barrages are directed using a pair of Punisher Drones that are launched from the hull. These diminutive Drones can also act as target designators for their parent, further supplementing the vehicle’s heavy firepower.

Finally, the Assailant houses a close support unit of Deadlock Heavy Infantry who are banded together into a Grand Company, their engagement protocols set to execute close range targets with their own brutal combination of Cyber and close ranged attacks. The infamous Deadlock Heavy Infantry Cadres are the faceless killers of the Directorate forces. Crewed by a lobotomised vat-bred amalgam of circuitry and advanced genetech, the Deadlocks are without pity, remorse or compunction. Armed with TS-Scrambler Weapons, they can be relied upon to deliver strong alpha-strike attacks into the heart of enemy formations where their ability to debilitate their foes should not be underestimated.

The Relthoza
Slamming into the ground at high-speed, the Javi Command Spire is designed to instantly intimidate all enemies of the Relthozan Empire, its impact shockwaves signalling the arrival of this devastating war machine on the battlefield.

Relthoza Command Helix

The massive spire acts as a core command point for Relthozan forces, providing support to both light and armoured forces in equal measure with extended Drone Nexus and Command effects. Once deployed from low orbit, the Javi expels a number of Narissa Gunnery Nodes to act as close defence and fire support. These nodes are outfitted literally as the Command Spire hurtles towards its target point on the battlefield and are considered to be highly flexible gunnery positions, despite their lack of manoeuvrability.

Finally, the Javi will release its bonded Salamas Bodyguards who are tasked with the Command Spire’s defence. Heavily armed and highly aggressive, these warriors will fight to the last breath to protect their primary Commander on the field.

Expelled by the Javi Command Sire, Narissa Gunnery Nodes are armed with one of two weapon types: Spinneret Launchers are particularly suited for engaging aerial targets, scanning the skies, ready to strike, whereas Chelicerae Missiles are often deployed against dug in enemies forces where their Corrosive Barrage weapons can concuss and debilitate the enemy prior to a concerted Relthozan swarm-attack.

EVEN MORE TO COME
As to the future, we’ve still got the Assault Helixes, Close Combat Leviathan and expanded Infantry Helixes to come. These three Helixes will deliver even more flexibility to a game that is already expanding for gamers. But we won’t stop there. Once the core 6 races have been assembled we will start adding Alliance races at a pace of knots. This will see some Alliances gain their first Helixes, whilst others will gain a major momentum, allowing players to actually field an entire fighting force based around their favourite Alliance race.

Note: The above images do not show the full contents of the Ground Command Helixes, rather they show the key unit types. See our online store for a breakdown of the full contents for each Helix.

Dindrenzi Federation Core Helix

Inside a Dindrenzi Core Helix, Commanders have access to a large number of skimming hover vehicles that can perform lightning fast hit-and-run attacks against their enemies, allowing them to deliver punishing firepower against their foes before slipping away unseen.

The largest vehicle in the Core Helix is the impressive Kratos Heavy Skimmer – a true battlefield predator, armed with Rail Gun technology that can give even the heavily shielded Leviathans a reason to be fearful!

Next up are the Eris Medium Skimmers – a medium range engagement skimmer, used by Commanders to support the heavy elements within the Helix with even more Rail Guns!

One of the key battlefield decisions for a Commander to make is that of deciding to hold back, using their hit-and-run ability to avoid enemy weapons fire, or dive straight in and use the impact of their railgun technology to cause shield using enemies to lose their advantage.

Added to this backbone is the Circe Specialist Skimmer tasked with the designation of the insertion points for the feared Nyx Light Infantry who are trained to overwhelm foes in lightning attacks when deployed via their Damocles Class Drop Pods.

Assaulting from low orbit is a major tactic of the Dindrenzi, using calculated gambles ot strike at the heart of the enemy, allowing them to secure strategic battlefield objectives.

‘The Dindrenzi Federation is a spearhead force, that uses its ability to strike deep into a battlefield to disorientate its enemy… securing key objectives with ease’

Finally, the Leto Light Recon Skimmers provide rapid support to their Infantry brethren using a combination of raw aggression and Harvester Coil Launchers!

The Dindrenzi Federation excels at extreme, focused aggression exercised along a minimal front using strong Recon Units and Elite Infantry to provide the killer blow.

Aquan Prime Firepower Leviathan

The graceful stride of the El-Shami Firepower Leviathan very often spells death to the enemies of Aquan Prime forces. Its sleek lines, excellent manoeuvrability and powerful fore mounted firepower make it a most dangerous opponent that hunts its foes through the blasted battlefields of the Firestorm Galaxy with a predatory hunger.

The Leviathan is armed with two deadly Solar Titan Lasers that are capable of eliminating any target in the Firestorm Galaxy with a combination of blistering laser fire and pinpoint accuracy that is unparalleled among its contemporaries.

Aquan Prime Firepower Leviathan

In addition to these weapons, the El-Shami has a built-in Nexus Designator it can use to further increase its damage potential by use of highly effective target locks.

The war engine also has a powerful anti-infantry weapon that strikes fear into the hearts of its targets – the Venom Missile System. This prototype weapon is often used on Aquan Ground Attack Aircraft, but not in the numbers mounted on the El-Shami, which fields the system in unprecedented amounts.

In addition, the El-Shami is often accompanied by a number of Imzani Light Skimmers, the crews of which are chosen from among the best of the Aquan Battle Shoals. These ‘super-elites’ are utterly fearless and provide excellent support to their parent element, both in terms of its raw firepower and tactical flexibility.

The Aquan Prime Firepower Leviathan Helix contains 1 El-Shami and 8 Imzani Light Skimmers, and is now available to pre-order from the Spartan Games online store.

Sorylian Collective Firepower Leviathan

At first glance the Nor’Bar’Ro Firepower Leviathan is often mistaken as a beast of burden, but nothing could be further from the truth. In Sorylian Collective society the ‘Ancient One’ stands as a paragon of intellect and maturity among members of society.

A creature blessed with far reaching knowledge and a profound understanding of the various theatres of war, the Ancient stands as a bulwark against the enemies of the Collective, imparting its learning to its followers while at the same time devastating the enemy with a variety of advanced weaponry.

Sorylian Collective Firepower Leviathan

The Ancient carries a howdah on its broad back from which it directs debilitating firepower, bringing down enemy flyers with ease using its Nar’Mok Precision Missiles and engaging enemy armour with its dual Nar’Vak Titan Cannons. When the enemy do eventually close with the behemoth, the Ancient focuses its Sar’Nav Grenade Launchers to finish its foes off.

The Ancient is often accompanied by a number of fanatical Ka’Kun Light Skiff units who are Oath Sworn to their master, and will fight to the death to defend it. Whilst not heavily armed, these light recon vehicles can be used to harass enemy who stray too close, ready for the Nor’Bar’Ro to deal the killing blow.

The Sorylian Collective Firepower Leviathan Helix contains 1 Nor’Bar’Ro Ancient, 4 Sorylian infantry figures and 10 Ka’Kun Light Skiffs, and is now available to pre-order from the Spartan Games Online Store.

The Relthoza Firepower Leviathan

There are few war engines in the Firestorm Galaxy that inspire the same degree of dread amongst its enemies as the Varisei-Kei.

Armed with two banks of Chrysalis Shard Cannons, this mighty vehicle is capable of directing a fearsome amount of ordnance at a single target or, if required, it can engage different enemies using its advanced targeting systems.

The Relthoza Firepower Leviathan

When the enemy close in, the powerful Bio-Toxin Projectors mounted in the vehicle’s tail can sweep across formations, spitting out caustic acid capable of eating through all bar the thickest of armour.

The Varisei-Kei is also blessed with some of the best nanites developed by the Relthozan tech-adepts, giving the massive war engine the ability to cloak itself on the battlefield. This tremendous feat of engineering is also supplemented with the enhanced self-repair systems that are consistently found on Relthozan military assets.

In addition to the Varisei-Kei, the Helix is often fielded with a number of contingents of Namisc Light Drones. These warriors are far down the pupation-path to becoming a fully-fledged Relthozan warrior, but are specially chosen to escort the Leviathan as they have been seen to exhibit a higher degree of aggression than normal pupates at the same development stage.

The Relthoza Firepower Leviathan Helix contains 1 Vardiss Heavy Walker and 12 Namisc Light Walkers, and is now available to pre-order from the Spartan Games Online Store.

Terran Alliance Core Helix

With a Terran Core Helix Commanders will find themselves able to field a strong, durable force, capable of withstanding much of the punishment that other forces can dish out, before closing to the optimal range for their unforgiving weapons!

The Vidar Heavy Tank exemplifies this strategy with a combination of M205 ‘Magellan’ Cannon and Hammerstrike Missile Systems. The Heavy Tank engages the enemy at range using its missiles until within optimum range to deliver the knockout blow with the M205 – a weapon known to strike terror in the enemies facing it.

The Heimdahl Medium Tank continues the theme acting as a support element, using its M127 ‘Drake’ Cannons to ‘Clear the Road’ for the other members of the Helix.

Supporting these elements are the Ullr Specialist Tanks. These come in 2 ‘marks’:

The Mk I acts as an Anti-Air Defence squadron, using powerful Shrike Rotor Guns to bring down enemy flyers with corrosive radio-active shells.

The Mk II is more unusual in that it can be attached to friendly armoured squadrons and strengthens the shielding harmonics of their parent squadron, greatly increasing the survivability of the force!

Close behind the main advance come the Sinir Armoured Transports with their Hirdmen Light Infantry on-board. These medium support vehicles deliver their cargo deep into the teeth of the enemy and then continue to support their charges with a powerful close quarter battle presence.

‘Terran Alliance forces are the stalwarts of the battlefield – soaking up enemy weapons fire before reaching their objective…’

Finally, the Terrans make extensive use of their own form of the Valkyrie Light Recon Vehicle, a small wheeled vehicle that packs a solid punch using its Raptor Grenade Launchers!

Whilst not the fastest force on the battlefield, the durability and rugged determination of Terran Alliance forces are often the undoing of many a complacent enemy Commander.

Terran Alliance Core Helix

Sorylian Collective Core Helix

The Sorylian Collective marshal their resources carefully only to expend them when maximum force can be delivered with mathematical precision.

As the undisputed masters of long range weaponry and artillery, the Sorylians deliver punishment from afar, before closing in to unleash their Light and Heavy Infantry upon their shattered foes.

Leading the line is the Hul’Ka Battle Walker armed with a terrifying Kor’Nak Heavy Cannon and Vaan Scatter Cannons. This hulking brute acts as an artillery platform as well as line breaker within a Sorylian Core Helix.

On the battlefield this brutal engine of war is a sight to behold, and many an enemy Commander has painfully learnt how truly devastating this Battle Walker is.

In support, the force utilises Bor’Ka Medium Walkers. These unusually shaped battle walkers are designed for up close and deadly combat with powerful Vann Scatter Cannons, providing the Walker with debilitating close quarter battle capabilities.

Supporting these heavy hitters are the Ka’Kun Recon Skimmers – a light, single-man craft used by the Sorylians to take and hold ground prior to the arrival of their infantry cadres.

‘The combination of mathematical genius and brute strength is something that makes the Sorylians a most tricky enemy to deal with…’

In terms of infantry, the Sorylians are rightly feared across the galaxy, with infantry strikes that target (and destroy) enemy lines like a hammer!

With the Kul’Vok Heavy Infantry (often deployed into battle from the back of a Hul’Ka Heavy Tank!) through to the adaptive Mul’Kat Light Infantry, who travel right into the firefight on specially adapted Bol’Vak Transport Skiffs, these kill teams mix overwhelming firepower with unparalleled aggression to shred their enemies.

The Bol’Vak is jokingly referenced to as ‘shooting troops into combat’ due to its speed of delivery. The result of which can be devastating when Kul’Vok Heavy Infantry disembark from it…

Sorylian Collective Core Helix

The Relthoza Core Helix

The Relthoza have a noble tradition of blooding their younger warriors on the battlefields of the Firestorm Galaxy. The honour driven society demands acts of heroism and, most of all, victory! Only the strongest survive and defeat ends in death.

With a Core Helix, a Relthozan Commander has access to a powerful combination of superior numbers and specialised Cloaking Technology.

Leading the line is the Visith Heavy Tank – a strong bulwark of a vehicle housing a Relthozan warrior psy-linked into the machine to provide a powerful commanding presence on the battlefield. Armed with Chrysalis Shard Cannons that fire kinetic projectiles towards the enemy at prodigious rate and Chelicerae Missiles that excel at forcing targets out of cover and into the open, a Visith is a ‘living vehicle’ to be feared.

In support of the heavy elements are a pair of Salamas Battle Walkers. These rugged battle engines house a fully developed Relthozan warrior and provide strong close support to the lighter elements using their ability to fire on different targets to their partner. Armed with an Aurelia Shard Cannon and some of the strongest close quarter battle capability on the battlefield, the battle walker is rightly feared across the Firestorm Galaxy.

‘The Relthoza are THE army for Commanders who like to play with hordes…’

In support of the Visith and Salamas is the Varic Support Walker. This engine has a smaller Relthozan warrior ensconced within, one genetically bred with a natural gift for calculation and battlefield awareness, and as such has been gifted with complex implants capable of linking the warrior to the higher command within Relthozan battle groups. This link allows for Yayiss Spires bristling with Jabri Drone Swarms to be delivered by Sky Drop deep into battlefield hotspots, allowing critical objectives to be rapidly captured.

Finally the Talamis Light Recon Walkers give the Relthozans a mobile reserve they can rely on to support their forces or break apart light formations that have suffered under the relentless barrage of the Relthozan gunnery and mandible attacks!

Ready for Planetfall?

Have you given Spartan Games a ‘Like’ on Facebook? Those that have were treated to a first look at our painted Sorylian and Relthoza fleets. And that’s not all we revealed last weekend!

Deliberate tacticians who use battlefield control and predetermined fire patterns to pin their enemies in place while their Heavy and Light Infantry Cadres move forwards to capture critical objectives – the Sorylian Collective are masters of the Long Game.

Sorylian Collective

The Sorylian Collective use a lot of Artillery to create areas of denial for their enemies, and powerful cannons to pound their enemies apart at a distance. As a result they have the longest ranged weapons of all races in Planetfall. The models are a mix between slow ground pounding gun tanks and faster skiff vehicles, the latter designed to transport their infantry at high-speed into firefights where their brutish nature is needed.

The Relthoza

Relthozan culture uses warfare to accelerate and hone the intense pupation cycles of their race. Or to put it another way – the strong really do survive, and then prosper and grow. In ground combat they rely on Spire Nodal Points (launched into the surface from low-orbit) to bolster their command and control, and as masters of Cloaking technology this race deems their shadow-carapace to be one of their most important military assets. Close quarter combat plays a big part of Relthozan methodology, with units eager to use speed to close the ground between them and the enemy, punishing them with their projective Shard Cannons and of course, rending them limb from limb for good measure!

Terran Alliance Strike Helix

Blessed with thick armour and access to powerful shielding technology, the Terrans are all about moving deliberately through the battlefield, laying down fire on forward elements of the enemy and then bringing their numbers to bear.

Terrans utilise shorter range weapon systems when compared to other races, but have the survivability to reach their objectives, coupled with the flexibility of multiple turret weapons to give them protection from all sides, to aid them in winning the day. In addition, Terran Commanders make extensive use of a wide array of weapon types ranging from corrosive Hammerstrike Missile Systems, to pinpoint G-43 Lasers and their punishing Magellan Cannons mounted on specialist vehicles designed to fulfil the roles the main battle tanks cannot.

Directorate Drone Flyer

The team have just been finishing up some testing of a new Directorate unit. It can launch from its tracked chassis and perform a Cyberattack on an enemy unit. But the best bit is the Flyer and its chassis is attached to the new Directorate Tank Killer unit we have designed. Quite a nasty pairing up.

Building a 12′ x 6′ city for the rulebook

You can see the terrain is designed to be modular and will flex to meet the needs of gamers from small boards to full-on cityscapes. The skyscraper is stacked three high here, towering over the landing pad. It’s missing the logo pack and walkways and mezzanine floors that can interconnect buildings, but it gives an idea of how flexible the system is.

If you want to be the first to get these kind of updates then head on over to our Facebook page and ‘Like’ us.

The Helix Effect

A game of Firestorm Planetfall is played using what we call Battle Groups. In turn a Battle Group is made up of Helixes, and at the heart of each Battle Group is what we call the CORE HELIX. It is this Core Helix that you can then wrap other Helixes around, and these are known as Attached Helixes. Different Attached Helixes include:

• Aerial Helix
• Heavy Helix
• Assault Helix
• Recon Helix
• Strike Helix (the Helix which will contain Leviathans)
• Support Helix

A Basic Battle Group is composed of ONE Core Helix to which a Commander can attach up to SIX Attached Helixes, ONE of each of the listed options. In its simplest form this Basic Battle Group is as simple as it gets to field a Force in Firestorm Planetfall.

NOTE 1: A Force is assembled using a Maximum Force Value (MFV) and this will dictate the number of models inside a Helix and, depending upon the MFV chosen by players, the number of Helixes that can be attached to the Core Helix.

Basic Firestorm Planetfall Helix

NOTE 2: The Core Helix is an important part of any Force, and as such it is one of the most flexible Helixes you will have access to. Inside the Battle for Proteus Prime Boxed Set is the equivalent of ‘half’ an Aquan and ‘half’ a Directorate Core Helix. You could therefore take TWO Battle Boxes and combine them, allowing both Commanders to field a FULL Core Helix of each of the two races.

Optionally, when the Aquan Prime and Directorate Core Helix Boxed Sets come out in our Wave 2 Release they can be added to the contents of a single Proteus Prime Boxed Set to again turn the supplied into FULL Core Helixes, for each respective Force.

FLEXIBILITY
But as we all know, building armies is never that simple AND can also much more fun when you inject mechanics that make Commanders think about what they are trying to achieve from their Force.

Step forward Adaptive Battle Groups. A capable Commander does not always want to follow the doctrine of Basic Battle Group creation, preferring instead to adapt their Force to better suit the strategic challenges presented, and to perhaps complement their tactical approach. This is achieved through a process of substitution within the Battle Group and is known as an Adaptive Battle Group.

Should a player wish to add a second Attached Helix of the same type it may only be done at the expense of a Helix that is directly opposite on the Helix Map. See the diagram below:

Adaptive Firestorm Planetfall Helix

In this example of an Adaptive Battle Group, the Commander is making a number of choices, deciding to forgo Assault, Heavy and Aerial Helixes for access to 2x Recon Helixes, 2x Strike Helixes and 2x Support Helixes! Clearly this is going to be a large engagement and the Commander wishes to have a some heavy hitting Leviathans coupled with an array of fast moving forces supported by elements such as Command Barges and Field Guns to help win the day.

Next up in our Blog Series will be looking at how you create Battle Groups using Allied Helixes, allowing such forces as Works Raptor, Terquai, Hawker Industries, RSN, Ba’Kash and Veydreth to be added.
