Zhitomir-Berdichev: German Operations West of Kiev 24 December 1943 31 January 1944: Volume 1

Zhitomir-Berdichev: German Operations West of Kiev 24 December 1943 31 January 1944: Volume 1

The first volume of a detailed and well-researched history of the important but neglected operation that was to be the beginning of the liberation of western Ukraine On 24 December 1943, the Red Army launched the first of a series of winter offensives against the German Army Group South under von Manstein, the overall object of which was to liberate western Ukraine from occupation. This first offensive is known to Soviet historians as the Zhitomir-Berdichev operation. Based on the unpublished records of the German 1st and 4th Panzer Armies, and supplemented by comprehensive mapping and order of battle data, this book provides an authoritative, detailed, day-by-day account of German operations as they developed in response to the Soviet offensive. It also gives a vivid insight into the planning and decision-making of the German Army field commands in conducting not only a mobile defence, but also a series of counterattacks which, in the final analysis, could do little more than provide a temporary respite in the face of the growing strength and skill of the Red Army. Eventually being published in two separate volumes, this first volume describes events until 9 January 1944, during which period the German forces were pushed back forcibly under the weight of the Soviet offensive, and includes 140 detailed daily situation maps in colour to allow the reader to follow operations as they developed day by day, presented in a separate mapbook to aid the reader's use of the study. Volume two will cover the period from 10 to 31 January 1944 and will describe the series of counterattacks undertaken by the Germans as they tried desperately to stabilise a situation that had already slipped beyond their control. Together this two volume set comprises a groundbreaking survey which is likely to set a new standard for future studies of operational combat on the Eastern Front.

Dropzone Commander Rules

The year is 2673.

160 years ago humanity was evicted from their home, invaded by the terrifying Scourge. A parasitic race determined to capture or kill every living being, they overwhelmed mankind’s defences.

Humanity escaped to the Colonies, abandoning Earth and the Cradle Worlds to their attackers. Now the United Colonies of Mankind have come back, fighting a bitter war known as the Reconquest.

They are beset on all sides not just from the Scourge, but the ancient alien Shaltari, the abandonists of the Post-Human Republic, and even on occupied worlds by the Resistance.

Now a brief window of opportunity has opened, allowing the UCM to return to Earth and finally take it back from the Scourge. It will be a hard-fought battle, although aid may yet come from unlikely sources. Humanity might have a chance at returning to their home, although they don’t expect a friendly arrival.

Battle for Earth is the first cross-game expansion for Dropfleet Commander and Dropzone Commander. It takes the ongoing narrative and puts it into overdrive as the Reconquest faces its bloodiest conflicts yet, both in space and on the ground.

Written by David J Lewis and Lewis Clarke, this book contains a huge amount of material! With a massive new chapter in the story, be prepared to learn about brand new parts of the universe, including the biggest battles ever fought.

Dropfleet Commander fans will find rules for all sorts of new ships, including the massive Dreadnoughts and much-anticipated Monitors, as well as full rules for Resistance fleets - the newest players in this intergalactic game.

Dropzone Commander players will find a full new version of the rules. This set of rules has been developed over several years, and is the one that the fans have been waiting for. Some rules have been tweaked, but there are many brand new surprises. The book also includes rules for using Behemoths in your games - colossal war engines that can turn the tide of an entire battle!

Most of the changes featured have already been released online some time ago and further rules revisions are available to download now. That being said, we have taken this opportunity to act on feedback from our fans and reviewers to make a few more minor adjustments to the book and the rules, which are as follows:

A) All current Errata, rules changes and most of the Clarifications have been incorporated into the revised edition.

B) We've made some changes to points costs etc. These are available to download, but in general terms, gunships and special forces are now cheaper in points, and some smaller weapons, upgrade costs and scenarios have been slightly modified.

C) Version 1.1 now features a double page index, a new page detailing how to build a Battlegroup and a brand new, first person mini-story!

D) Text is now further from the spine away from the centre of the book to increase readability, and the blue 'Rules' margin colour has now been split into three distinct shades for Background, Rules and Scenarios.

E) Paper quality is improved, with a totally uniform laminate texture throughout.

F) Rules for our recent releases (e.g. the Ferrum, Hades, Firedrake, Annihilator etc) are NOT featured in the revised edition. They will be printed in a future expansion of Dropzone Commander.

10mm Gauls from Adler Miniatures

The Gauls are here!

Having been asked to produce Ancients in 1/300th a fair bit over the years we have finally decided to do an Ancient range but to go up to 10mm. Myriad reasons for this but mainly its the extra size means we can depict the armour and dress of the period with greater detail and variations. It also has the benefit of making the weapons more robust.

The first offering is Gaul's to be followed by Caesarian Roman.

Gauls

GAU 1 Warband infantry (30 figs)
GAU 2 Heavy infantry (24 figs)
GAU 3 Gaesatae (30 figs)
GAU 4 Skirmishers (30 figs
GAU 5 Slingers (30 figs)
GAU 6 Archers (24 figs)
GAU 7 Standards, musicians
GAUC 1 Heavy cavalry (15 figs)
GAUC 2 Light cavalry (15 figs)
GAUC 3 Noble cavalry can be used as cavalry leaders, chieftains, Generals and bodyguard

TRANG1 Shield transfers general infantry and light cavalry
TRANG2 Shield transfers round cavalry

Adler Miniatures

About

About us 1984-2013

Adler began sometimes around 1983 though the idea had germinated a little earlier.

At the time the only Napoleonic figures in 6mm scale were those made by Heroics & Ross. Nice figures but for the life of me I couldn't paint the little devils. A fact made worse by several people at the club who could paint them beautifully!

I was at the time running and designing for Mikes Models so I started to experiment with designing figures in 6mm scale. I soon realised that the H&R figures were as they were because they derived from the WW2 infantry they did. These were very wee skinny fellas because the vehicles at that time were a bit 'squashed ', at the time moulding / casting technology was in its infancy and there was a lot more shrinkage so the vehicles lost a lot of height from top to bottom. Not I hasten to add a problem that H&R stuff suffers from the these days the vehicles casting and moulding are top notch.

So when I started using GHQ ranges for WW2 I noticed how much bigger they were than the standard and that they had gone to 1./285 rather than 1/300th. For some reason ( nice easy steps I imagine like 25mm, 15mm etc. none of which numbers actually describe the height of the figures) 1/300th/285 became known as 5mm scale, it never was such a number but it did catch on. The actual height of a 1.285 scale figure is 6.4 from base of feet to eye level.

This way of measuring figures rather then trying to measure to the top of the head shrouded in headgear started around this time and has since become pretty standard. All part of the scale creep so designers can make better proportion figures, the difference say from 15 to 18mm doesn't sound much but for a designer its like the difference between designing a small apartment rather than designing a 4 bedroom semi detached house.

So when I looked again I realised that as the figures I wanted to make didn't have to fit in with vehicles, I could bulk them out a little so as make them easier to paint. When I did the WW2 ranges I had to reverse the process!

Adler was born then and over the mid 80's I started the business full time and here we are nearly 30 years later.

And in case anyone wonders the name Adler was chosen because at the time there were a couple of Eagle miniature firms in existence and being half German it seemed obvious to choose the German equivalent of eagle instead.

So many plans for the future but getting the design time is always the problem, being a designer led outfit means that I do pretty much everything. At some point I plan to off load the production side of things so as to leave more time for doing the important bit.

I have just started doing ancients in 10mm, considered them in 6mm for a long time but 10mm allows far more room for the character that is such a necessary part of the ancient period. Its a nice scale has the the advantages of both 6mm and 15mm and few of the disadvantages. Having got past the learning curve stage hope to accelerate the production of the 10mm line.

Fear not however the Napoleonic remain a core part of the business and additions and remakes are constantly in the works.

Well hoped you managed to stay awake till the end........er..hum.....wakey wakey!
