1776. While the year is best known (and rightfully so) for the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 1776’s historical significance doesn’t end there. Not by a long shot. Here are a few other momentous events that occurred in that fateful year.

Thomas Paine’s Common Sense lit the way to the Declaration. In early 1776, Thomas Paine published Common Sense, a pamphlet so popular among patriotic American colonials that more than 100,000 copies were sold in the first three months of publication. Common Sense had a major influence on the Declaration of Independence. Later in the year, Paine’s The American Crisis would inspire Washington’s demoralized troops to keep fighting.

American Quakers raise questions about the morality of slavery. Long before tensions over slavery would ignite the Civil War, the Revolution’s call for independence and freedom prompted a Quaker Society of Friends group to publish a document declaring their opposition to slavery.

Washington’s army suffers repeated defeats in New York and New Jersey. While the Revolution would last until 1783, the nadir of America’s fortunes in the war was reached at the end of 1776. British victories at Brooklyn, White Plains and Fort Washington left the patriot cause hanging by a thread, on the precipice of defeat.

Then the tide turned. It was also in 1776, on Christmas day, that George Washington and his bedraggled army crossed the Delaware River to launch a daring attack on the British. Victories at Trenton and a week later at Princeton would change the course of the war. Without these unexpected successes, the lofty ideals of the Declaration of Independence would have been all but meaningless, and British victory would have been assured.

In honor of the dramatic events that occurred that pivotal year, this week you can become a member of the American Battlefield Trust for an introductory rate of just $17.76.  In addition, your contribution will be matched by an anonymous donor dollar-for dollar, so your $17.76 becomes $35.52!
