Sign Our Letter to Support Preserving Battlefields

Last month, I announced that the American Battlefield Trust had reached a milestone unprecedented in American history – the preservation of 50,000 acres of historic battlegrounds from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War. This achievement is the direct result of the generosity and passion of individuals such as yourself, whose enthusiasm for history ignited the national battlefield preservation movement.

Our cause has also benefited from tremendous governmental partners around the country, including the United States Congress and the National Park Service. Their institutional support for battlefield preservation has resulted in the federal Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant Program, one of the most effective tools in our arsenal. The matching grants awarded through this program have enabled the American Battlefield Trust and other nonprofit groups to save more than 30,000 acres of battlefield land – at sacred places like Antietam, Brandywine, Fort Donelson, Gettysburg, Princeton, Richmond and Vicksburg.

However, as we all well know, nothing in life lasts forever – at least, not without a push!

If we want this outstanding program to continue, we need your help to encourage Congress to pass the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act (H.R. 6108). This bipartisan bill, introduced by U.S. Congressman Jody Hice of Georgia, would authorize up to $20 million annually in federal matching grants for battlefield preservation. Further, for the first time, it would provide funding to restore and interpret battlefield sites – making them the outdoor classrooms we all know they ought to be.

Please take a moment to write your Member of Congress, and ask them to cosponsor the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act. Let them know that – as a constituent – this issue is important to you, and you would like their support. With the approaching 250th anniversary of America’s War of Independence, there is no better time than now to pass this landmark legislation.

Thank you as always for your support for battlefield preservation!

Help save more hallowed ground for years to come. Send a message to your Member of Congress urging them to cosponsor H.R. 6108, the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act!
