Speak Out: Tell Your Senators to Support Preserving Battlefields

Speak Out: Tell Your Senators to Support Preserving Battlefields

Earlier this year, when we needed your help with battlefield legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, you answered the call. Thanks to your remarkable efforts, the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act is moving with lightning speed through the House, securing critical support from the Committee on Natural Resources. Now we need your help again – this time in the U.S. Senate.

A few weeks ago, the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act was introduced in the Senate as S. 3505 by a bipartisan group of Senators, including Senators Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Roy Blunt of Missouri and Roger Wicker of Mississippi. The bill is identical to the House bill you so enthusiastically supported. It would authorize up to $20 million annually in federal matching grants for the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant Program for the next decade and provide funding to restore and interpret battlefield sites.

As I’ve said before, our cause has benefitted from tremendous governmental partners around the country, including the United States Congress and the National Park Service. The matching grants awarded through the Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant Program have enabled the American Battlefield Trust and other nonprofit groups to save more than 30,000 acres of battlefield land at sacred places like Antietam, Brandywine, Fort Donelson, Gettysburg, Princeton, Richmond and Vicksburg.

Please take a moment to write your Senators and ask them to cosponsor the Preserving America’s Battlefields Act, S.3505. Our online advocacy tool is simple, and sending a letter only takes a few minutes. Let your Senator know that – as a constituent – this issue is important to you, and you would appreciate their support. With the approaching 250th anniversary of America’s founding in just a few short years, there is no better time than now to pass this landmark legislation.

Thank you, as always, for your support for battlefield preservation!
