Cold Harbor: a Victory & a New Opportunity

Cold Harbor: a Victory & a New Opportunity

I am delighted (but not particularly surprised, knowing as I do the generosity of our members) that we can announce that two of those five tracts are now saved! One of those properties marks a portion of the line held by the Sixth Corps during the nightmarish fighting on June 3, 1864. The other spot formed part of the Confederate line at both Cold Harbor and the 1862 Battle of Gaines’ Mill.

As successful Civil War generals well understood, nothing can be gained by resting on our laurels. We have momentum, and we need to keep it going.

We are adding a new target property to our Cold Harbor campaign. In addition to the three tracts (totaling 53 acres) you already know about, we now have an opportunity to acquire an additional, critically-important 28-acre property. Not only does this tract include land over which Confederate forces passed while attacking the Army of the Potomac at Gaines’ Mill in 1862, it represents one of the locations that saw some the heaviest bloodletting during the tragic Battle of Cold Harbor.

It’s not every day that we get the chance to save a parcel that played a key role in two different Civil War battles!

If we want to keep this sacred land out of the hands of developers, we need your help.

The combined cost of our current target properties at Cold Harbor is now $2,722,000 for 81 acres. This is valuable real estate, and it is not just historic preservationists who would like to acquire it. Thankfully, an extremely generous donor has pledged $1,200,000 to the cause! That leaves us with a current fundraising goal of $1,522,000.
